The Abalone shell is used in traditional smudging ceremonies to represent the elemental Water. Burning the smudging herbs in the shell brings together the four elements, as the shell represents water, the herbs represent earth, you light the herbs on fire, and smoke goes into the air.
These shells vary in size, but average around 5" wide and around 1-1/2" deep.
